Our Projects - Serving Our Community
The Caviel Museum
The Caviel Museum of African American History in Lubbock, Texas, has served as a community-binding point for over 50 years. We link the past to the present and beyond by preserving and celebrating the broad cultural heritage and contributions of citizens of the Hub City and greater South Plains region.
Our well-curated collections, dope jazz concerts and thoughtful educational programs build deeper understanding and appreciation of local history. This ultimately helps us bridge generational gaps and promote harmony within the greater Lubbock community.
The Caviel Museum of African American History was and remains a cornerstone of East Lubbock. We are the place where Lubbockites from all backgrounds come together to reflect, learn, grow and sometimes just jam.
This ongoing commitment helps strengthen the social fabric in Lubbock. It ensures that black Lubbockites always have a place that documents and sustains their living contributions to the city’s identity.
Jazz Festival & Events
Lubbock’s Caprock Jazz Festival is our signature night of contemporary jazz—pairing nationally recognized artists with standout local talent to celebrate music, culture, and community. Proceeds power the Lubbock Roots Historical Arts Council and the Caviel Museum of African American History, keeping exhibitions, youth programs, and neighborhood projects thriving year-round.
More than a concert, the festival is a community gathering: elegant venue, great acoustics, and an atmosphere that invites you to dress up, meet your neighbors, and enjoy world-class performances close to home. Your ticket (or sponsorship) helps us fund artist residencies, student opportunities, and free cultural events that make the arts accessible across East Lubbock.
Booker T Washington Community Garden - Lubbock
Rooted in East Lubbock, the Booker T. Washington Community Garden is where neighbors grow fresh food, share skills, and strengthen community. Managed by Lubbock Roots, the garden features raised beds, fruit trees, and pollinator-friendly plantings—serving as a hands-on classroom for youth, families, and first-time gardeners. Harvests support local neighbors and community events while teaching practical, sustainable gardening.
Everyone’s welcome—no experience needed. We provide tools, seeds, and friendly guidance during open volunteer hours and seasonal workdays. Schools, faith groups, and businesses can schedule group days, adopt a bed, or sponsor supplies like soil, compost, and irrigation parts. Your time and support help the garden flourish all year.
Community Culture
Community culture at Lubbock Roots is where art, history, and everyday neighborliness meet. From the Caviel Museum’s exhibitions to the Caprock Jazz Festival’s stage, from First Friday Art Trail nights to the Booker T. Washington Community Garden, we create welcoming spaces where elders, students, families, and visiting artists build together. Our “Take Pride in the East Side” photo showcase and the East Lubbock Gateway vision elevate local stories and public places, inviting neighbors to see themselves reflected in the city they call home. Whether you’re volunteering, sharing a recipe at a harvest day, or dancing in the aisles at a concert, you’re part of a living tradition that strengthens East Lubbock—one gathering, one project, one shared story at a time.
