Booker T Washington Community Garden - Lubbock

Booker T Washington Community Garden - Lubbock

Tucked beside the historic Booker T. Washington neighborhood, the Booker T. Washington Community Garden is more than just a green space — it's a living tribute to resilience, stewardship, and the power of growing together. Operated in partnership with the Roots Historical Arts Council, the garden invites community members of all ages to plant, nurture, and harvest both food and fellowship.

What began as a small patch of reclaimed land has blossomed into a thriving space for urban agriculture, education, and cultural enrichment. Garden beds overflow with seasonal vegetables, herbs, and native plants, while shaded seating areas and walking paths offer quiet places for reflection and conversation.

What We Grow

The garden showcases a diverse mix of crops — many of which hold deep cultural significance within African-American and Indigenous traditions. From okra and collard greens to sunflowers and sweet potatoes, the garden connects generations through the shared wisdom of the land.

More Than a Garden

At its core, this is a place to learn, lead, and live well. The garden regularly hosts:

  • Youth workshops on gardening, sustainability, and nutrition
  • Elder storytelling circles that pass on agricultural knowledge and community history
  • Seasonal planting days that bring neighbors together to prepare, plant, and celebrate
  • Harvest festivals that feature music, food, and cultural performances
  • Hands-on classes on composting, irrigation, and seed saving

Whether you're planting your first seed or teaching a grandchild how to hoe a row, there's a space for you here.

Community Partners

The garden is made possible through the efforts of Roots Historical Arts Council, generous volunteers, and partnerships with local schools, churches, and organizations such as the East Lubbock Art House and Texas Tech University Urban Tech.

Why It Matters

The Booker T. Washington Community Garden stands as a reminder that healing, health, and heritage can all take root in the same soil. It honors the past while growing a sustainable future—one harvest, one conversation, one child’s curiosity at a time.
